Big lumps now await the vfl

The holidays are approaching – and looking at VfL Wolfsburg's remaining schedule until the winter break, the Bundesliga team could do with a little Christmas miracle. Because now the team of coach Valerien Ismael will have to face some really tough challenges.

Yesterday, the VfL pros were once again licking their wounds. They had the day off, could the 1:1 from Saturday in Ingolstadt once again calmly go through their heads. Once again, Wolfsburg were weak, the one point was more than lucky. In the game against the penultimate-placed team, whose squad is worth only one-fifth as much as VfL's, the post and a very strong keeper Diego Benaglio were needed three times to avoid losing the game. And the fans are asking themselves after this performance: Who do the Wolfsburgers want to win their points against before Christmas??

Because the remaining program has it in itself, four plays are still lining up. It starts on Saturday with the home game against the third-placed Hertha BSC. A week later it's off to the record champions, at FC Bayern the VfL has never been able to win in 22 attempts, only getting a draw once. The last home game of the year against the strong Eintracht from Frankfurt, which is currently in fourth place. The supposedly easiest game in Monchengladbach only comes at the end of the season. Borussia is considered strong at home, but is currently only one place and three points better off than VfL.

"We are not relaxed, but we must not let ourselves go crazy either," says Julian Draxler in view of this hammer-hard remaining program. "We can not simply dismiss the table out of hand. We're down there, and rightly so," the national player declares. Captain Diego Benaglio says: "We are not without a chance, even if the tasks will not be easy."

If Wolfsburg do that, there may even be an opportunity in the remaining schedule. Because actually they can only surprise positively, it can hardly get much worse than Ingolstadt. "In the Bundesliga, everyone is good for a surprise," knows Benaglio, who led the way with a bearish performance on Saturday. If teammates follow his lead, there's something in it against top teams too.

And if not? Then the VfL winters with ten points. Even archrival Eintracht Braunschweig had one more point in 2013/14 – and were relegated at the end of the season with 25 points. tik
